PROJECT

This 3-week workshop will be divided into two parts. The first week we will learn how to build a cob oven combined with a smoker.  The second and third weeks we will build a 10-12m2 cob room.  The teacher will be Kita Glass, new on the CruzinCobGlobal team.  Kita comes from Santa Cruz, California and has been a natural builder specializing in cob and straw bale for the last 6 years and has completed many interesting projects, like a compost hot tub and his own very unique cob studio, as well as several rocket stoves!  He has worked as a carpenter and in all phases of natural building with Boa Constructor of Santa Cruz.

CruzinCobGlobal is working in collaboration with Camino Verde to bring you this wonderful opportunity to learn cob with theory and hands-on daily work (Sundays are off to rest and visit the island) in one of the most beautiful landscapes and islands on the Planet, La Palma, “the beautiful island”.  It resembles Kauai in its greenness and alternative culture.  It is the westernmost island of the Canaries.

LOCATION

Camino Verde is located in the southern part of the island, as can be seen on the map below.  Camino Verde is an ecological educational farm bringing more environmental awareness to the island and begun by Helma Hesse, from Berlin, Germany and a dozen friends.  Check out their website for more information and to see photos.

ACCOMODATIONS AND MEALS

The workshop will be held on the farm where free camping is offered to all the students.  Alternatively, students can pay a very affordable fee for a double or single room in a nice apartment a short walk from the farm, equipped with a kitchen and communal bathroom (private room: 60€/week, shared room: 40€/week).

Meals will be provided to all students free of charge by the Finca.

8am-9am: Breakfast

9am-1pm: Morning Session

1pm-2pm: Lunch

2pm-3pm: Lecture/Theory/Discussion

3pm-5pm: Afternoon Session

7pm: Dinner

Some evenings will have organized activities, slides, videos, etc… as decided by the group

TRANSPORTATION

From the US, flying into Barcelona or Madrid or Malaga will get you the cheapest connections to the Canaries with Vueling or RyanAir or EasyJet, as well as Binter and Iberia.  However, only Vueling (cheapest at 50% less than Iberia) and Iberia fly directly into La Palma (SPC) from Barcelona  and only Iberia and Binter/AirEuropa fly directly from Madrid.

Once can also take a boat from Cadiz for 150€ to Fuerteventura and then a little more to get to La Palma. It’s a 2-day+ journey, but food is free and it’s very relaxing!

Please plan to arrive onsite by Saturday, November 19th or Sunday, November 20th by 5pm to settle in and be ready for orientation on Sunday after dinner.

COST & REGISTRATION

This is an unusually low-cost workshop, especially if one chooses to camp (bring your equipment!) as the food is being provided free of charge by Camino Verde so it is important to make your payment by October 21, 2016 to guarantee a place.

Make your payment in full as soon as possible to guarantee a place.  You can also make a 50% deposit payment to hold your place and pay in full by Sunday, November 6th, 2016.  If you do not complete your payment by November 6, we cannot guarantee you a spot and you will lose your deposit.

Payments can be deposited into a European or US bank account or sent using Transferwise or Paypal.

Cost is 160€ for the cob oven workshop and 320€ for the cob building workshop or 450€ for both workshops saving you 30€.
